In the last two decades, there has been an increasing concern in including sport in the European Union’s agenda for development as sports can be an essential tool to increase employability, create new jobs, and promote labour market integration In the last two decades, there has been an increasing concern in including sport in the European Union’s agenda for development as sports can be an essential tool to increase employability, create new jobs, and promote labour market integration and work capacities.

In 2011 the EU emphasised the importance of sports as a tool for social inclusion, regional development and employability. Since then there have been three Work Plans for Sport, being priorities of the final work plan: 1) Integrity of sport, 2) Economic dimension of sport, 3) Sport and society.

The project “Skills by Sport 4 the Mediterranean” (SbS4Med), aligns with the EU priorities mentioned above.

The SBS4Med intends to promote social transformation in the Mediterranean region using Sports as a “tool” for addressing the social and economic problem of low employment, massive migration processes and insecurity.

The education and skills development in and through sport allows for better integration of youth in the labour market and achieve its needs.

The project aims to deliver knowledge and information about how the skills and competencies of coaches and athletes can contribute to employability.

The projects’ final objective is to promote a synergetic relation between sports and labour market.

Identify Skills

To be transferred

Identify a set of skills (including soft skills), transferred by coaches and sports instructors to different target groups, that are useful for integration in the labour market and enhance employability.

Skills for the market

Create training courses for coaches for the raise of awareness on the skills and competencies developed through sport, and support them in developing eventual missing skills requested by the labour market.

Coach qualification

Transfer knowledge

Promote training and qualification of coaches to transfer their knowledge, soft and life skills, enhancing the employability/ entrepreneurship of the athletes.

Have a long-term oriented contact group with the South Coast of the Mediterranean on a crucial topic: employment and economic development through sport.
